” The film also plays with contrasts to great effect. The characters wear desi outfits of the period, but stylistically the film has the look and feel of a modern international thriller. The eclectic background score composed of contemporary songs and sounds that sound anachronistic but enhance the visuals.Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! is a cinematic delight that deserves a sustained run in the multiplexes.”

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy Film review by Komal Nahata

“On the whole, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! is an ordinary fare which does not give the audience the thrill of a murder mystery. While it will be liked by the classes, its acceptance among the masses will be limited. It will, therefore, not do good business at the box-office.”

“In the end the film has a lot going for it, even if it isn’t as fully satisfying as Banerjee’s previous works. This is a sprawling, ambitious effort with remarkable attention to detail; a film that deserves to be watched, especially for its masterful filmmaking.I’m going with three out of five for Detective Byomkesh Bakshy. Give it a chance, prepare to be patient, and chances are that it’ll stay with you.”

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy Movie Review by Times Of India (TOI) – 3.5/5

“Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! is possibly India’s best-looking sleuth flick till now. A chilling climax masterfully ties up the tale – but 30 minutes less would’ve given this a much firmer knot. Still, DBB! is a fun watch presenting another mystery – how Sushant looks good, despite a uni-brow?Go solve.”

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy Movie Review by Raja Sen (Rediff) – 2.5/5

“Thanks to Banerjee, there is a lot for his man — and, indeed, for us — to drink in: this sumptuous period adaptation fondly recreates 1940s Calcutta right down to the tram signs and the posters for Jane Russell movies, and Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! is a gorgeous, gorgeous film. ”

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy Film review by – 4/5

“What’s Good: A classic whodunit thriller which holds the suspense quite firmly till the end. This is an excellent effort of bringing to life India’s detective figure Byomkesh Bakshy and with this film, Dibakar Banerjee forms a strong base for a crime-mystery franchise. Characters are strong and the suspense build-up is bang on.

What’s Bad: For those who have enjoyed seeing a much more reclusive and reticent Byomkesh in Rajit Kapoor’s TV series, Sushant Singh Rajput seems a little goofy and unsure on his first case.”

” But this is also one of those films that makes up for the principal actor’s deficiencies by the performances of those who surround him. Anand Tiwari’s second-fiddle act is first-rate, and Neeraj Kabi, as the deceptively and determinedly good-natured doctor who runs the shabby-genteel ‘men-only’ lodgings where much of the action takes place, is so good you forgive his last-minute exaggerations. You can say the same thing about the film.”

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy Movie Review by Bollywood Hungama – 2/5

“There are many factors which may make the film struggle at the Box Office. A few of them include unwanted violence (esp. in the second half), a plot that went haywire and also too much of thriller elements. Generally, any kind of murder mystery comes with a sinister motive, which gets revealed towards the end. But, in the case of DETECTIVE BYOMKESH BAKSHY!, the film gets dragged on endlessly, even after the culprit has been identified! On the whole, DETECTIVE BYOMKESH BAKSHY! can be skipped, without any regrets.”

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy Movie Review By Deccan Chronicle – 3.5/5

” The film follows the core structure of whodunit — the chase, the red herrings, the slow cooked suspense leading up to a grand reveal. There’s a generous spray of blood too, that underlines just how violent those times were. While the surprise element is welcome, there seems to be a stretch there and a theatrical one too. And it doesn’t entirely free your mind of questions either. After a stunning build-up, this is a mild let down.”

“What would have got my vociferous approval is if the ending had lived up to all that promising foreplay. But I wouldn’t write this one off entirely. Give Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! a chance.”

“Credit to the director perhaps, but each of the characters, leading with Sushant and Neeraj Kabi, have come up with extremely convincing performances. Only Swastika Mukherjee, the Bengali actress who makes her debut in Hindi films, seemed to be trying too hard to fit into the mysterious character Angoori Devi that she plays.
Don’t miss it. Even if just to go back to the magical world of nostalgia created so beautifully and earnestly by Banerjee and cinematographer Nikos Andritsakis.”
