1. CV Raman

2. Srinivasa Ramanujan

Srinivasa Ramanujan was an Indian mathematician born on December 22, 1887. When he was a mere 11 years of age, he had beaten the mathematical knowledge of two college going students.

3. Jagadish Chandra Bose

Jagadish Chandra Bose was a botanist, biologist, polymath, physicist, and archaeologist and was born on 30 November 1858. He was known for his work in the crescograph which could help in the measurement of plant response.

4. Vikram Sarabhai

Vikram Sarabhai was the initiator of the space program in India and was born on 12 August 1919. He was able to convince the Indian government to set up the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). Vikram Sarabhai was awarded the Padma Vubhushan after his death in 1972 and the Padma Bhushan in 1966.

5. Homi J. Bhabha


Homi J. Bhabha was the first individual who was the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of India and was born in Bombay, on October 30, 1909. Though he was against the manufacturing or atomic bombs, he wanted to produce electricity which could reduce poverty faced in India.

6. Visvesvaraya

Visvesvaraya was the Diwan of Mysore during 1912 to 1918 and was born on 15 September 1860. His birthday is celebrated as Engineer’s Day in India on 15 September. He was the one was discovered a manner of filtering water in the year 1895 using ‘Collector Wells.’

7. Venkatraman Radhakrishnan

Venkatraman Radhakrishnan was a space scientist and member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and a renowned space scientist. He was born on May 18, 1929. Venkatraman came up with the idea of the fabrication and design of ultra light sailboats and aircraft.

8. Chandrashekar

Chandrashekar was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in the year 1983 for his theory of black holes. He was born on October 19, 1910. He was the nephew of none other than another great scientist whom we just read about, CV Raman.

9. Satyendra Nath Bose

Sri Satyendra Nath Bose was an Indian physicist who specialized in quantum mechanics and born on January 1, 1894. He sent a small article to Albert Einstein known as “Planck’s Law and the Hypothesis of Light Quanta” which was accepted.

10. Meghnad Saha

Meghnad Saha was known for his work based on thermal ionization of elements and was born on October 6, 1893. This led to the Saha Equation. As an Indian, you will be glad to know that he was the first one to lay the plan for the Damodar Valley Project.
