  1. @Seshasayana: We are talking here about economic output/GDP of cities, not area. Area is not a measure of how developed a city is. @Sharath: You can think Hyderabad is best city in world, not in India, that does not change the reality! The data here are authentic from different economic sources (national and international)…so top 3, as you can see are Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata…Hyderabad’s economic output is not even half of that of no. 3 Kolkata.

  2. kolkata is nowhere to be in the 3rd position
actually u will understand that when u live in there
i am from mumbai and i came here for 5 yers as for a transfer and its like moving from a first class to 3rd class.
i dont understand why is this called a metropolitian city….
as far as the trams are concerned it is a major cause for traffic and is literally worthless and another major problem is the rikshaw pullers where it is absolutely TERRIBLE….
i also agree that it is good and has all kinds of sights and places to visit but still it is nowhere to be in 3RD position.

    • Lol your observing power is too low.. you are good for nothing. As I work in Epicurean Commission, most of foreign delegates say Calcutta is the best city of india after Mumbai. I visit many cities of India. There are many problems…. Recently I’ve visited Hyderabad, where Taxi is not available like Kolkata and Mumbai…. Its very important point to be a metro city. Hyd is a metro city but medicine shop is very rear to find. Do you know according to a survey of World Bank Which product is not available in Kolkata And Mumbai.. that won’t be found in whole India….

    • haha as if ur mumbai sucks less i have visited mumbai and seen a hill of slum just before the plane could even land.
Every city is from India you should nt have hatred for any specific this just proves you illeterate attitude any how bangalore and hyderabad are far far away with only gdp nearly half than kol and delhi is quite near …
Every city has her own charm Mumbai Delhi and Kolkata the the financial points of India every 1 knows that you one comment or my one comment wont make any difference.

      • hi mam,
i think you are missing the point here. this article is about the GDP of the cities and not about what sucks more or less. However, i am really surprised how it has such a high GDP with almost no industries. From where this amount of money comes from..

      • seriously.. if you visit the posh areas of Mumbai & compare it to the posh areas of kolkata, there is ZERO comparison..

posh areas of mumbai, real estate prices are 10 times more than in posh areas of kolkata. frankly kolkata would have developed so much more if bengalis had the sense to not vote for stupid commies

      • Have you heard of jute industries, textile industries, leather industries etc that’s where the money comes from buddy. There’s more to development than just being an IT hub, having said I do agree that kolkata has not reached its true potential due to the disgusting politics, had the politics been done considering development as priority, no other city would have even come close 2nd to kolkata in this list, I say this with all due respect to other cities and have no personal animosity against them, however what I say are facts.

      • there are slums in all Indian cities..
but if you visit the posh areas of Mumbai & compare it to the posh areas of kolkata, there is ZERO comparison..
posh areas of mumbai real estate prices are 10 times more than in posh areas of kolkata

    • Visit Salt Lake, Lake Town, Tollygunge, New Town, Rajarhat, Park Street areas of Kolkata. I am sure you will realize why Kolkata is at 3rd spot. Trams are the heritage transportation of Kolkata. Kolkata is not only the Financial Capital of West Bengal but it is the financial capital of the whole Eastern India including the North-East Region. Who are you to judge whether Kolkata is 1st Class or 3rd Class. It’s the right of the citizens of Kolkata who reside there.

      • Kolkata does not deserve to be in the third spot. It is one of the WORST cities of India busking in the glory of British era. How can a city without any industry has such a high GDP?

    • The bitter truth is that our most advanced cities are also worst city to live. kolkata GDP takes it to 3rd but standard of living is very poor there

  3. @ Ashish..

Did you board the Metro and did you visit Salt Lake??.,. every metropolitan will have some drawbacks..I visited Mumbai and suffered like anything in traffic…local trains coz there was no metro in 2013!!

  4. Kolkata all the way with its highest GDP growth for consecutive years and being the only metropolitian region in the east and northeastern India. Even the difference is much less compaired to delhi 169 and 150 and bangalore is sooooooooo far behind and hyderabad more

    • If Bangalore that bad then why so many bengalies come here for work. Obviously, your city does not have work for them. If this trend goes on Bangalore will be in TOP 3 before 2030.

  5. According to me Delhi should be top delhites are the richest and classiest people in India.Followed by Kolkata or Bangalore then Mumbai

  6. Frnds it is right that Kolkata developing economy rate is decreasing day by day,if we don’t take any steps then soon a day will come the city would transfer to a graveyard….

  7. how come Bangalore is not topping the list!!!!!!!!!!!!Mumbai and Calcutta are far worse and rustic compared to sophisticated Bangalore. May be Govt money is keeping Mumbai GDP high….

  8. This information is old.

For example, Ahmedabad’s gdp was about 65 billion USD in 2008 and reached 119 billion USD in 2011.

Cities like Pune, Hyderabad and Bangalore have been rapidly growing as well, significantly faster than Mumbai and Kolkata. It won’t be surprising if Bangalore has already over taken Kolkata.
